MAKING HISTORY
Founded by Cambodian-American artist Sophoan Sorn in 2005, San Joaquin Cross-Cultural Media (SJCCM) actively collaborates with arts and cultural organizations, community leaders, and San Joaquin Valley's multicultural community. Upon its founding, when it was formerly Stockton Crossing Cultural Bridges, SJCCM focused on the heritage and history of Cambodians and Filipinos linked through the Stockton Sister Cities program. The programs were launched to the community in cultural festivals during the Spring of 2006 with over 3000 people in attendance, which included the World Premiere of the first SJCCM documentary "To: Iloilo and Battambang," (directed and co-produced by Sorn) and a family festival at The Haggin Museum called "Celebrate! Cambodia and The Philippines."
The Northern San Joaquin Valley, comprised of the California counties of San Joaquin and Stanislaus, is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic region of over 1,000,000 people. The city of Stockton serves as the seat of San Joaquin County and the largest city of the region. In Stockton alone, there are over 75 different ethnic groups represented. This region is growing - economically, culturally, and artistically.
In 2007 began the development of the 1st International San Joaquin Film Festival (SJFF08) - a five-day, global film festival opened from June 4 to 8, 2008, with 54 films from 18 nations, in 35 events across the city, composed of general screenings, forums, and galas. (read more)
SJCCM has an digital filmmaking and mentoring program called Youth Video Vision (YVV). Two short films sponsored through the YVV program will premiere at SJFF08.
SJCCM is one of six pioneer organizations of the newly-formed Stockton Arts Center Alliance, which includes the Stockton Symphony Association, Stockton Chorale, Stockton Civic Theatre, Stockton Opera Association, and With Our Words, Inc.
OUR FUTURE
Future plans for SJCCM include: annual production of the San Joaquin Film Festival; an annual children's film festival; year-round, independent cinema screenings; an international, cross-cultural conference; special lectures by industry luminaries; screenwriting competition; storytelling symposia; and production of cultural films.
San Joaquin Cross-Cultural Media strives to build cultural bridges to unite the people of this dynamic community - one film, one event, and one step at a time.
